The Ocean

The ocean is a pretty mystic body of water that not everybody understands. In order to save the ocean, we must truly appreciate it.

Did you know these facts about the ocean?

  • The ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. That is about 140 million square miles
  • More than 97% of Earth’s water is in the ocean
  • More than 90% of this habitat exist in the deep sea known as the abyss
  • Less than 10% if this space has been explored by humans

  • More than 3.5billion people depend on the ocean for their primary source of food. In 20 years, this number could double to 7 billion.
  • A swallow of seawater may contain millions of bacterial cells, hundreds of thousands of phytoplankton and tens of thousands of zooplankton
  • The world’s ocean contains nearly 20 million tons of gold
  • An estimate of 1 – 10 million of species inhabit the ocean. Only 230,000 have been recorded.

  • The Great Barrier Reef, measuring 1,243 miles, is the largest living structure on Earth. It can be seen from the Moon.
  • Although coral reefs comprise less than 0.5% of the ocean floor, it is estimated that more than 90% of marine species are directly or indirectly dependent on them.
